Southeast Asia refers to the part of Asia that includes the Indochinese Peninsula and the nations of Maritime Southeast Asia. The region is situated in the southeastern part of the continent, south of China, east of India, and to the north of Australia. According to the United Nations Population Division, approximately 668 million people live in Southeast Asia (2020).

Malaysia has among the world’s lowest crime and drug use rates (partly because the punishments are so harsh) and Malaysians are generally a very law-abiding people.

Police say statistics show they have managed to reduce crime, but anecdotes of break-ins, snatching and violent crimes abound in papers and on social media.

A National DNA Database holds the DNA profiles of certain suspects arrested and thereafter convicted, for recordable offences and DNA profiles collected from some crime scenes. West Africa is in the early stages of recognising the importance of maximising the potential use of DNA profiling to enhance its capacity to solve cases with DNA, which will ultimately facilitate crime reduction. This requires certain changes in legislation which is required to ensure that every person arrested for an alleged offence as well as all convicted offenders, will have their DNA profiles loaded onto the Database.

Malaysia is a destination, supply and transit point for women and children trafficked for commercial sexual exploitation. Women and girls from Burma, Cambodia, China, Indonesia, the Philippines, Thailand, and Vietnam are trafficked to Malaysia.
