Southeast Asia refers to the part of Asia that includes the Indochinese Peninsula and the nations of Maritime Southeast Asia. The region is situated in the southeastern part of the continent, south of China, east of India, and to the north of Australia. According to the United Nations Population Division, approximately 668 million people live in Southeast Asia (2020).

Crime is present in various forms in the Philippines, and remains a serious issue throughout the country. Illegal drug trade, human trafficking, arms trafficking, murder, corruption and domestic violence remain significant concerns.

The Philippines has a high rate of murder cases, which is the highest in Southeast Asia. Most major cities are plagued with high prevalence of crimes.
This is only placeholder text : Forensic DNA Profiling used in conjunction with a DNA Database aids criminal justice systems to efficiently and effectively resolve crime as well as protect the innocent. Despite these benefits the use of DNA profiling and the establishment of DNA Databases remains limited.
A National DNA Database holds the DNA profiles of certain suspects arrested and thereafter convicted, for recordable offences and DNA profiles collected from some crime scenes. West Africa is in the early stages of recognising the importance of maximising the potential use of DNA profiling to enhance its capacity to solve cases with DNA, which will ultimately facilitate crime reduction. This requires certain changes in legislation which is required to ensure that every person arrested for an alleged offence as well as all convicted offenders, will have their DNA profiles loaded onto the Database.

Kidnappings have long been common in the southern Philippines, connected to its piracy and terrorism problems. Gangs using kidnappings as a means of income, targeting both wealthy Filipinos and tourists.
